With the advance of compulsory educational reform, inquiry-oriented teaching & learning is greatly attached importance to. It is very important to our teaching & learning that activities of science inquiry are chosen according to the cognitive abilities of the children with different ages and are designed to aim at the misconception from our students that are emphases of science education. Friction and phenomenon of friction are important contents in our elementary science education. So this research aims at studying our pupils'comprehension about the contents. 124 pupils were investigated on their comprehension of the phenomenon and conception of friction by clinic interview and questionnaire in preliminary study on the elementary and secondary school. The conclusion:Firstly, about comprehension of the phenomenon of frictionAbout this question---do what hold up the object above the desk? Based on pupils'comprehension, we divided their answers about the phenomenon and conception of friction into 3 level stages:I,only weight's obstacle1,weight is the force from interior of a object. 2,weight isn't a kind of force ,but volume,area or itself of the object. 3,weight is gravitation.II,weight and friction's obstacle1,our pupil also have three types of understanding about weight that are the same as those just mentioned above. Desktop's roughness holds up a object above that, about which our pupils have two kinds of understanding: one is that Desktop's roughness can't produce force, the other is opposite.III,friction's obstacleDesktop's roughness holds up a object above that, but weight doesn't do so. Our pupils have two cognitions about this type: they consider that desktop's roughness can't produce force or the friction isn't the force given by the desktop, the other is opposite.63.7% students who are in the majority hold III(weight and friction's obstacle) according to this investigation. These students are mostly distributed in grade 4,grade 6 of elementary school and grade one of secondary school.Secondly, about comprehension of the conception of friction...
