| Vocabulary is of prime concern in learning languages. And vocabulary teaching is one of the important components in foreign language teaching. While until second language acquisition (SLA) research came into being in the 1970s, the research in vocabulary learning and teaching began to grow in applied linguistics. After 20 years development, there has been great progress in second language vocabulary acquisition (SLVA) research. Researchers and learners have generalized all kinds of methods in order to acquire vocabulary efficiently and effectively. All kinds of vocabulary teaching methods are trying to find an effective way to teach vocabularies. According to the present situations of Chinese senior school students' English study, the author proposes vocabulary acquisition through extensive reading for seniors in China. The Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition Hypothesis (IVAH), which is based on the research into first language learning, was first proposed by Nagy and Herman. Combined with Krashen's Input Hypothesis, IVAH has become a kind of vocabulary acquisition that can be used both in L1 and L2. The thesis attempts to explore the possibility of integrating IVA through reading into the strategies used by the seniors to acquire vocabulary. In order to test the author's hypothesis, a study is conducted and presented herein before the experiment itself is explained and its results given. By the end of the thesis the author comes to a positive conclusion about the hypothesis. |
