| English vocabulary is a foundation of English study,and one of the three major elements of the English language.English vocabulary is quite significant that most of the Mongolian students spend a lot of time and energy on it.However,the result is not desirable.With the process of further study,students must do with more and more unknown words.As a consequence,students should adopt the correct vocabulary learning strategies.Word guessing strategy is a method to inference the meanings of unknown words that you might encounter in the English learning process.It plays a significant part whether in the learners’ vocabulary learning or reading comprehension.A plenty of literature and information show that guessing meanings of unknown words through word formation and contextual clues can improve students’ guessing ability and reading comprehension.Based on the relevant theories and studies,the research is undertaken to examine three questions:(1)Will the students’ ability of guessing words be improved after the training?(2)To what extent,can the training of word guessing strategies affect the scores of students’ reading comprehension?(3)Can the training of word guessing strategies enhance the students’ interest in learning English?This training lasts about one term.The author selects 60 students who are from No.1 Mongolian High School.The students are divided into two classes,namely,the control class and the experimental class.The research is conducted through the following procedures:First of all,students are required to accomplish a pre-test on word guessing and reading so as to know their original word guessing ability and reading.Next,the students in the experimental class(EC)are trained to guess meaning from the context for 12 weeks so that they can master some guessing word strategies.Then a post-test on word guessing ability and reading is done to see whether there is an obvious increase.After that,8 students in the EC are selected to receive an interview.The goal is to know about the role of word guessing strategy training for students in the EC.Finally,the conclusion is drawn: The author used the SPSS 21.0 statistical software to process and analyze the collected data.(1)The guessing training could effectively improve the students’ word guessing ability and reading.The post-test on word guessing in EC improves 21.1% than that in CC.The post-test on reading in EC increases by 11.6% than that in CC.The post-test on word guessing in EC increases 27.5% than the pre-test on word guessing in EC.The post-test on reading in EC increases 36% than that in pre-test.There is a large gap between the two classes.It means the class(EC)trained through guessing strategy for 12 weeks is improved much more than the class(CC)which is not.(2)The results show the students are more interested in English learning.Besides,the students enhance the guessing skills and they are satisfied with the word guessing training.(3)In the teaching experiment,thinking of the indigenous language feature of Mongolian students the author trains the students the comparative method of the English and Mongolian equivalent words,especially those words with similar pronunciation and some meanings,which is the characteristics and highlight of this research.In brief,word guessing strategy could assist students to memorize vocabulary more effectively and improve their guessing ability.Besides,the improvements of guessing ability has a positive effect on students’ reading comprehension.So long as it is applied accurately,far better learning and teaching effect can be obtained in the coming future. |
