English idioms have particular functions in four aspects. First of all, they have varieties of figures of speech, which help us express ourselves vividly. Next, they have harmonious rhythm and symmetric structures, which give us a feast of art and aesthetics. Besides, there are a sea of cultural messages from western countries, which enable us to have a better understanding of westerners. What's more, their contents are rich in experience of life, which can enlighten us and benefit us.This paper has analyzed the functions of English idioms and the influence upon the English language teaching and learning in senior middle school in many ways, such as the fields of aesthetics, culture , morality etc. It shows that if we teachers can put English idioms into English teaching classroom properly, they can help students master a lot of knowledge in rhetoric and understand English readings better, they also can help improve the ability of aesthetic appreciation, help understand more about western countries and learn something useful in life. Surely they can arouse students' greater interest in learning English.In addition, English idioms help students learn new words and grammar rules more easily and interestingly.Therefore, as a whole, English idioms will play an active role in English teaching and learning in middle school.
