| Mental rotation is the ability of switching spatial representation, in other words, the ability of imagining oneself or the object's rotating. As a basic human operation and a fundamental aspect of spatial abilities, mental rotation has high correlation with other basic spatial abilities, which can predict one's certain aspects of growth and future success well. However, few researches are about mental rotation or about using mental rotation test to examine individual's spatial abilities in sport field. Through a series of experiments, this study investigates the difference of spatial abilities of athletes coming from different items and at different level. It also compares the mental rotation test of individuals whose spatial abilities are different, and examines the effectiveness of mental rotation test, which provides some theatrical support for teaching, training and scientific selection.This study selects 60 athletes of Wuhan Institute of P.E coming from three sport items (gymnastics, ball and track and field). Each item has 20 athletes. In the 4 experiments, we use four common cognitive materials (numbers, letters, 2D graphics, 3D graphics) to study the difference of spatial ability coming from different items and at different level. All the participants complete verbal intelligence test and spatial ability test after the third experiment in order to examine the effectiveness of the mental rotation test. Four experiments are designed to be similar, which are all 2-factor experimental design. The independent variables are sport item and sport level, and the dependent variables are response time and rate of correct response. According to the experiments and discussion, this study concludes: The spatial abilities of athletes coming from different items are different; The spatial abilities of high level athletes are better; Mental rotation test can predict individual's spatial abilities well.(r=0.583)...
