In the past few years, English National Entrance Examination has been putting more and more stress on the discourse consciousness of Senior students, then the theory of English discourse analysis has been employed to instruct Senior English reading teaching. There are too many English teachers who overemphasize the roles that background knowledge plays in Senior English reading, however, it is not fully recognized simply to emphasize the role of this kind in Senior Grades, because at present a large number of Senior students commonly feel that they are in great need of English background knowledge and then how shall English reading teaching be carried out? In my opinion, on the one hand, teachers are supposed to provide them with enough available background; On the other hand, teachers should also educate them to comprehend the titles for reading materials, analyze the discoursal structures of reading materials and appreciate the cultural knowledge from reading materials, through which their competence on how to deal with examinations will be upgraded as well as their reading and writing competences, thus reaching Standard of English curriculum, indeed.To begin with, the thesis touches on the study significance of discourse analysis, its study situation at home and abroad, its advantages & disadvantages in practical use in the first chapter; In the second chapter, the teaching approaches of English reading in Xiangfan NO. Four High School and their problems fully taken into consideration, the Hypothesis is put forward that the problems will be able to solved by carrying out the three branches of discourse analysis, that is, comprehending the titles, analyzing the discoursal structures and appreciating the cultures (including background knowledge) of reading materials will play positive roles in reading comprehension; In the third chapter, the process to analyze discourses are introduced and its probable good effects are supposed, next by observing the practical teaching results the conclusion to be tested has been drawn that the approach is able to improve reading comprehension, then this conclusion has been tested & ensured through operating a series of experiments, collecting data and analyzing results in the fourth chapter; At the end, the paper lists some tips that should be reconsidered, meanwhile, the author also appeals that teachers are required to combine the approach of discourse analysis with the traditional "grammar-focused-on & sentence-based-on" one to seek a scientific, perfect approach to enhancing reading-comprehension competence.
