As is known to all, language is the tool of communication, and the ultimate goal of learning a language is to communicate with others in that language. Phonetics is the primary medium in interpersonal communication, so learning the correct pronunciation is of great importance for language learners. As for the level of students who study in secondary vocational schools, the author is firmly convinced of the significance to teach the knowledge of pronunciation in the very beginning. It is strongly recommended in this paper to utilize the positive transfer and at the same time avoid the negative transfer according to the coeval features and intellective features of the students in teaching practice. It is believed to be an efficient and effective method to solve the problems of the teaching of pronunciation.Through experiments and questionnaire and by using comparative analysis method to study the positive transfer and negative transfer which Chinese pronunciation brings out on segmental and super segmental features, this paper is intended to find out the focal points of pronunciation teaching and introduce strategies on how to promote the positive transfer and avoid the negative transfer. The purpose of the present research is to offer teachers some suggestions and methods to improve the phonetic level of students with a well-defined objective. The author proposes the teaching strategies on how to promote the positive transfer and avoid the negative transfer, and furthermore, verify their feasibility and superiorities. The paper falls into six parts. Chapter 1 is the introduction, in which the author analyses the present situation of English level of students and English teaching in secondary vocational schools, presents some problems in the current English teaching and proposes the inevitability of phonetic teaching. Chapter 2 gives a historical review of the development of language transfer, as well as a contrast between the Chinese and English phonetic and pronunciation teaching. Chapter 3 presents the positive transfer and negative transfer related to the Chinese phonetics. In Chapter 4, the author proposes the methods and strategies on how to promote the positive transfer and avoid the negative transfer. In Chapter 5, the writer tries to prove that the new method is better than the traditional one by conducting an experiment. By comparing the scores and performance of students of the controlled group with those of the uncontrolled group in an oral test, we may tentatively arrive at a conclusion that efficient approaches of teaching pronunciation in secondary vocational schools consist of neatly arranging teaching contents, starting from listening, paying equal attention to the listening and speaking and cooperative learning. However, there has never and will never be a perfect method in phonetic teaching, and the author believes that the new methods in question are far from being perfect.
