With the deep reform and opening, frequently interact, we need a great deal of high quality foreign language experts. Fluently oral English , strong writing competence and reading competence isn't enough."Skill is more important than knowledge."We should improve students'cross-cultural competence, improve their pragmatic competence, make them use foreign language more correctly and suitably. We use foreign language to fit the habit of target country, express the speaker's thought, make students understand deeply our own culture and Western culture. English teacher should connect cultural knowledge to English teaching.In the thesis , we investigate the pragmatics competence of vocational school students, analysis the cause of pragmatic failure, point out that we should connect language teaching to cultural background. We discuss some theories on language and culture and some relative theories of cross-cultural communication in order to avoid pragmatic failure. In this thesis we introduce western and Chinese culture background knowledge in the textbook and in the other ways. We instruct the students to compare the differences between western and Chinese culture so that they can master native culture and western culture well and develop advanced western culture , changing what is backward and resisting what is decadent. So we can carry on cross-culture communication well.Our English teacher should realize the importance of cross-cultural competence. We should connect language teaching to cultural background so as to improve high quality foreign language learner to fit the need of society.
