Nowadays, English writing is playing a more and more important role in international communication and cooperation. However, in China, we always do not attach much weight to English writing in our school education. Thus, many serious problems exist in the current teaching of English writing. Based on the belief that cooperative learning is more effective than traditional approaches in English writing classroom, this study was designed to adopt group writing for a further confirmation that cooperative learning is more effective in teaching English writing in Chinese middle schools.Based on the theory of cooperative learning, this paper is an attempt to guide the students to English writing. It aims at improving students' writing competence and the effect of ELT classroom. The author of the paper has applied the theory of cooperative learning to teaching English writing in a senior high school and made a satisfactory achievement. Cooperative writing emphasizes the joint participation of the teacher and students and holds that writing activity is a dynamic, developing and integrating process. Through mutual participation and cooperation, it can establish an equal and friendly relationship between the teacher and the students. This mutually respective, trustful and cooperative relationship, in turn will create a democratic, harmonious and lively atmosphere in the classroom, which can effectively help finish the teaching activities and improve the teaching effect.The new English Curriculum Standards requires that teaching should be focused on students and students' development. Moreover, it requires that English teaching lay stress on subjective position in studying process, on students' sensibility and on students' lifelong study abilities. Under such circumstances, English writing teaching needs to introduce a new learning mode—cooperative learning, which faces all students and promotes the whole development of students' language activities.According to the current state of Senior English writing teaching, this thesis seeks to carry out cooperative learning in English teaching, which makes up for the shortcomings of English classroom teaching, strengthens the teacher-student and student-student communication in English teaching process, promotes the diversity of English teaching, exerts affectional functions of English classroom teaching and accelerates the students who are good and poor at English to make progress altogether. At the same time, carrying out cooperative learning in English can help transfer the examination-oriented education into quality-oriented education, change traditional teacher-student relationship into a new mode, cultivate students'cooperative awareness, competitive awareness, collective spirit and students' abilities to make innovations and obtain information through various channels. Therefore, I carry out a further cooperative research about cooperative learning in English writing teaching, which is important to rectify cognition, deepen education reform and promote quality-oriented education completely.This thesis deals with some theories about cooperative leaning and how to apply it to English writing teaching. A contrastive research about English writing teaching is done between two classes of Senior Grade Three. The period of the research is 20 weeks, aiming at providing reference to English teaching in middle schools to carry out cooperative learning.
