Cultural awareness is set as one of the teaching goals clearly at senior middle school for the first time in the New English Curriculum Standard in 2003,which not only clear the three aspects of cultural awareness including cultural knowledge,cultural comprehension, intercultural communicative awareness and competence,but also makes out the specific content standards It not only connects with the latest foreign language teaching theories,but also points out the current situation of emphasizing on language knowledge but ignoring cultural knowledge at senior middle school. The goal of cultural awareness marks a new phase of foreign language teaching in our country, meanwhile, it will be a great challenge for teachers to instruct cultural knowledge and develop students'communicative skills. The thesis intends to put forward feasible strategies based on the analysis of cultural theories and problems existed at senior middle school.There are three chapters in the thesis.Chapter one is the preface. It discusses the reasons of the research from two aspects of teaching goals in new curriculum standard and current situation of cultural instruction at senior middle school. The research method and aim are mentioned in the chapter as well. Chapter two expounds the primary theories of cultural instruction including its theoretical basis, significance, content and principles. Chapter three is the focus of the thesis. It puts forward the specific strategies which based on the detail of teaching procedures and the goals of cultural instruction. A unit of SEFC taken as an example is designed according to these strategies in this chapter.
