It is clearly stated in the new criterion of English course in senior high school"Writing is a communicative ability to write and convey messages. It is one of the aims of the English teaching to foster students'writing ability."Recently writing plays an important role in the NMET. Therefore teachers are supposed to give students instructions on how to write and efficiently organize students to write in senior high schools. Students'writing ability should be trained and improved step by step with intension and organization. This study seeks to explore an effective approach to improve the efficiency of English writing. So far, two approaches are mainly adopted in China. They are the product approach and the process approach. The study aims at experimenting the hypothesis that the process approach can improve students'writing ability by means of giving lessons, surveys and interviews to justify the possibility of implementing the approach in the middle school.I am a teacher in a foreign language school. The students are given lessons in small class, which is made up of about 20 students. After a term's teaching with the process approach and questionnaires and interviews, some data are collected to discuss the feasibility to the approach in the small class. The result shows the students'writing ability can be improved with the instruction of the process approach in the writing class.This thesis consists of six parts:The first part is the introduction part. It provides the background for choosing the topic, the meaning of the research.The second part mainly deals with two writing approaches: the product approach and the process approach and reviews development and research of the process approach at home and abroad. Meanwhile the steps of the process approach in teaching are suggested.The third part is the core of this paper. Aims, methods, object of the experiment and design of a sample lesson are introduced.The fourth part is about the analysis and discussion of the experiment. The questionnaire and interviews are analyzed together in details in this part. These suggestions are based on the analysis in part three in order to give reference information of writing teaching strategies.The fifth part makes a reflection on the disadvantages of this paper and proposes further researchThe sixth part is the conclusion of the paper.
