Questioning, as one of the most important teaching methods, started when the first class came into being; or even it occurred before real modern classes began. In the modern times when education share diversity, ideas of education change each day and new teaching methods are available day by day, questioning is still one of the most important teaching methods. Besides, it is the most common and easily-taken method. Therefore, study of how questioning being used at class in high school at present is extremely important for improving the quality of English teaching.The author, a high middle school teacher of English for 20 years, is greatly conscious of the importance of questioning in English class. Therefore, the research is trying to study questioning in various aspects. First, the essay looks back to the achievements made by experts, including why teachers ask questions, the strategies in questioning, the results of questioning and how the students respond to the questioning, etc. But all the achievements by experts are on broad sense, related to a variety of subjects. Little is focused on the high middle school English teaching. Though they are in some way instructive to high school English teaching, they are not aimed at them. As for questioning , which is used as a main teaching method in high middle school English teaching, interrelated study and data are quite scarce.Six teachers from a province-degreed model high middle school in a county are chosen to be the sample of being studied. They' re of great representative . Four of them have been working as a teacher of English for over ten years. They' re much experienced in English teaching and of different ages. The other Two have just left normal universities and taken their posts.This study adopts the way of class recording, that is, recording all the questions in the class, including the opportune time of questioning, the ways of questioning, the time given to the students to prepare, the ways taken by the teachers to guide the students and how the teachers respond to the students' answers, etc. The students' responses and replies to the answers are also recorded. After that, the types of the questions, the meaning to the English teaching and the questioning strategies adopted by the teachers are analyzed. After class, the author of this essay talks with these teachers about how they prepare these questions and what their opinions and attitudes towards questioning in English classes. Besides, the author talks with the students trying to learn about the students' opinions and attitudes towards questioning in the English classes, as well as their enthusiasm to take part in it.Through the analysis of the English classes, the author learns all about the facts of questioning in middle school English classes .All the aspects focused on by the experts, like preparation for the questions, styles of the questions, questioning strategies, effects of the questioning, students responses etc, are all studied carefully and fully analyzed . From the study, we can find some good points that are worth affirming and spreading, meanwhile, some bad points that need to be revised and improved.The essay also deals with the questions provided by the textbooks. It analyzes the designing of these questions and gives some good advice on how to make full use of these questions.
