M.McCarthy (1990) indicates, "No matter how good one's grammar is and how beautiful one's pronunciation is, but if one has no adequate vocabulary to express one's own feelings or to understand others' opinions, one still cannot communicate with others in this language". Vocabulary is the most important one of the three major components that constitute English language, it is the foundation of any kind of communication. However, vocabulary learning is the most difficult task in students' study. It is, therefore, especially important to study vocabulary learning strategies and the teaching of vocabulary learning strategies. Vocabulary learning consists of metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, social/affection strategies. Through the research the writer found the application of vocabulary learning strategies could greatly promote vocabulary learning, consolidation and using. Based on this research and many years' teaching experience, the writer suggests a set of the methods of vocabulary learning strategies teaching.The thesis consists seven chapters.Chapter One is the introduction, describing the importance of vocabulary and the study of vocabulary learning strategies. Hypotheses are formed and rationale is discussed. The arrangement of the thesis is also introduced.Chapter Two is the general introduction of English language strategies. It gives the definition of English language strategies and introduces the structure of the language as well as the classification of the language. In the chapter, it also analyzes which factor is helpful to language study and which factor influences language study.Chapter Three states the knowledge of vocabulary learning and the study of vocabulary learning worldwide. The steps of vocabulary learning and its related strategies, the classification and specific description of vocabulary learning strategy are discussed in detail.Chapter Four states the current situation where students in junior school study English. Try to find the typical problems which exist among students and also try to find the solution to these problems.Chapter Five designs the investigation of vocabulary strategies in junior School based on the theory of strategy according to the statement on vocabulary study strategies.Chapter Six introduces the methods to train students in vocabulary strategies, including aims, meanings, steps and models, which can be applied in Junior English study.Chapter seven summarizes the results, success and disadvantages of the research. Further study of vocabulary is expected.
