This dissertation is an investigation into the overall pattern of vocabulary learning strategies used by Chinese middle school students. A comparison is made between the vocabulary learning strategies used by good learners and those by poor learners, and an attempt is made to explore the relationship between vocabulary learning strategies and outcomes in learning English by means of a questionnaire survey and vocabulary knowledge test. Meanwhile, by training the students to grasp vocabulary strategies. I tried to find out whether the strategies are helpful for the students to improve their vocabulary learning abilities or not. In the process of training. I also helped them to make plans themselves, do self-management and self-evaluation about the vocabulary learning themselves. After a period of training, I designed the tests and used SPSS to analyze the data collected in the test, to evaluate the effectiveness of the training and got some findings, and I found that gender has little effect on English vocabulary learning strategies, but there are some significant differences in the employment of the strategies between the good learners and poor learners. These findings indicate that effective vocabulary learning strategies facilitate vocabulary learning and are helpful to autonomous vocabulary development. This requests the teachers to provide strategies-based instruction to students as part of the foreign language curriculum. They should modify their future vocabulary teaching to really meet the students' urgent needs. Learning will be facilitated if students are explicitly trained to become more aware of, and proficient in the use of a broad range of strategies. This paper consists of three parts: The first part is the introduction and literature review, and it includes Chapter One. Two and Three; the second part which consists of Chapter Four. Five and Six, is the investigation of and analysis on the motivation, beliefs and strategies of senior English learners; And the third part, Chapter Seven, is the experimental teaching practice which introduces some vocabulary teaching methods, so that the readers can easily put them into practice in their own classroom teaching practice, which aims to enable the students understand that learning strategies is the "short cut" to learn English better, and the mastery of learning strategies can enhance the efficiency of English learning, and also strengthen their capability of the use of English. Chapter Eight serves as a summary of the whole thesis.
