It is a common problem that the senior students are weak in English writing. The main aim of English writing teaching is to improve students' writing ability and further improve their English level.Language teachers often meet with various errors made by students in the process of teaching. No matter what painstaking efforts teachers and students make, errors seem to be inevitable. Therefore, learner's errors have long been a troublesome problem for English teachers. So the task of the thesis is to find out the categories of errors, the sources of errors and measures that teachers can take to prevent students from making errors. In this paper, with Contrastive Analysis,Error Analysis, and Interlanguage as theoretical guidance,The author first has collected the errors made by senior 2 students in their compositions in one term, then classified the counted errors into three major types:the local errors, the global errors and others errors. For the local errors, the thesis has mainly discussed grammatical and lexical errors;for the global errors,it focus on discourse coherence, information arrangement and pragmatic problems.Besides, the thesis also has discussed other errors. The author collected and classified errors in order to find effective ways to correct and avoid these writing errors. Therefore, the author first analyzed the sources.Based on the pioneer research, various sources of writing errors have been classif into four kinds:interlingual sources, intralingual sources, limitation of basic language knowledge and writing skills and teachers' ignorance of commenting on composition and correcting errors. For interlingual sources, the thesis lays emphasis on NL interference. And for intralingual sources,it focuses on overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, false concepts hypothesized and incomplete application of rules. Accordingly, relevant error correction methods and pedagogical suggestions are put forward in order to be helpful to teaching strategies, teaching focal points and instruction of writing skills and further to increase the writing ability of the learners. This paper contains six parts.Part 1 is an introduction. It introduces the background and necessity of the paper.Part 2 concerns the related theories to error studies, including Contrastive Analysis,Error Analysis, and Interlanguage, which offer the theoretical support for the later discussion. At the same time, the merits and weakness of different viewpoints are discussed.Part 3 presents a diverse classification of errors made by different linguists.Based on these classifications, errors made by students in this paper are classified into three groups:local errors, global errors and others errors. Each group contains a detailed classification of different standpoints.Part 4 makes a careful study and analysis of the causes of errors and induces the causes of errors into interlingual errors, intralingual errors, limitation of basic language knowledge and writing skills and ignorance of commenting on composition and correcting errors.Part 5 draws a conclusion and sets forth some error corrections and teaching methods to reduce errors.Part 6 sets forth the author's suggestions and some problems to discuss.
