Language and culture are closely linked to each other. With the development of international trade and globalization, more and more foreign language teachers are aware that culture teaching plays an important role in language teaching and that intercultural communicative competence is an integral part of communicative competence. However, foreign language teaching and learning should not simply provide students opportunities to learn and know about target culture; it should also fulfill the task of transmitting their own home culture; which is one of the objectives for foreign language education. Expressiveness of home culture in English, as a requisite of transmitting one's home culture, forms an essential part of cross-cultural communicative competence. Most students face embarrassment when they encounter intercultural communication. For today's students, they just learn pure western texts and accept western ideological compiled in their textbooks. On the other hand, teachers of EFL usually focus on the Western culture, ignoring the learners' own culture. This one-side flow of the target culture misleads the English language learners who would not take their home culture as a necessary communicative condition into consideration. So students don't know how to express their own culture in English, a lack of such a competence may, to some extent, leads to breakdown of cross-cultural communication.In the thesis, the review on studies of cultural teaching in the West and China shows the necessity of combining language with cultural teaching in teaching English as foreign language (TEFL), and the theories of the domestic scholars also indicate the importance of teaching Chinese culture in TEFL at present. With the focus on the necessity of introducing Chinese culture in English teaching in senior high schools, the thesis presents a detail discussion of how to introduce Chinese culture in senior high schools. Then it offers some methods of introducing Chinese culture in TEFL in senior high schools in class and out of class, and does an empirical study on these methods. The relevant results show that the methods are feasible.All the efforts made above will be beneficial for the overall development of students, not only in the learning of other cultures, but also in the learning of home culture so as to maintain successful and equal communication and accelerate the spread of Chinese culture to have more people enjoy and learn from the beauty and brilliance of Chinese culture.
