The progressive rank elevation of scientific research in colleges makes the contradictions between teaching and scientific research more and more apparent. If the two can develop harmoniously and promote each other, the undertaking of colleges is bound to make remarkable progress. However, as the unity of opposites in a contradiction, the two main functions of higher education - teaching and scientific research - have always been out of harmony. This question is faced with almost all the colleges which are capable of scientific research.Unity is based on opposites. We must try to find the common points of teaching and scientific research in order to integrate the two. The strategies to achieve the unity should be found out according to the thought that from theory to practice and then from practice to theory. Teaching is the precondition and groundwork for scientific research and the latter, if well done, can support the former. Teachers are the main body of teaching and scientific research, thus, provided that the relation between teaching and scientific research is well dealt with, the relation between teachers' teaching and research will be well done. Even though the discrepancies between teaching and research do coexist objectively, they are not unconquered. On condition that we can realize the internal connection between the two and seek a suitable approach, the unity with discrepancy of teaching and research can be achieved.This thesis takes the practice of teaching and scientific research in Yancheng Institute of Technology as the study case. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the relation between teaching and research are performed through the forms such as interviews, data collection and meetings. When problems are found out, the causes are explored and then solutions are put forward. The harmonious development system of teaching and scientific research in colleges is to be fully constructed on three levels: college, departments and teachers.
