| English writing is one of the four basic skills of English learning. And teaching writing is indispensable to English teaching. However, for a period of time, it has been perplexing to English teachers. The purpose of English writing instruction in middle school is to train students to use oral and written English for basic communication. Since many students, when they face a given topic, do not know how to start writing and what to begin with, writing skill is not only the aim of English teaching but also an important teaching means. However, in modern English teaching, accuracy of language is over emphasized. As a result, students'writing ability and systematic writing training are ignored.In the traditional language teaching, writing is often neglected by most English teachers. As a means of teaching, writing training helps to improve the students'language learning, review the previous knowledge and further the use of language. Writing is the most effective way in language learning. Though learners may make mistakes in using the language in writing, the mistakes the students have made are positive, not negative, which help the students make greater progress. Writing needs continuous training and practice. If the students have the ability to write a good composition, their English proficiency must be very high.The problems in writing are related to the vocabulary, grammar and coherence. Most high school students can not write good compositions with coherence in meaning and structures. The students firstly can not choose proper words before writing. Additionally they can not make correct sentences. That's because they lack basic knowledge and lack strict writing training practice. So their compositions lack coherence in meaning and structures.Though most students make great efforts to learn English, they still have difficulties in writing. Most students feel bored and tired in the writing class in face of the difficulties. Therefore traditional writing model must be reformed according to the requirements of teaching and the present situation around us. Through teaching experiment, the author tried to train the students'writing ability by word-sentence-text writing model, that is, listening, speaking, copying, imitating, free writing model, which focused on the systematic writing process. The research began from making sentences with words and phrases from the text, which focuses on the student-centered learning to train their writing ability. The whole class could be involved in the activity. Self-evaluating and peer-evaluating composition were used in the model so that all students of different English proficiency could improve their writing ability.As for the theoretical basis of the research, it includes information processing theory, Schema Theory and Swain's output hypothesis.The results of the experiment show that the word-sentence-text writing model can improve the students'writing ability. At the same time the students can become more familiar to the use of words and their interest in English study has been stimulated.However, there are some limitations of the study as following:First, the sample in this research is very small. The limited number of the subjects can't represent the actual situation about the senior middle school students'English writing in China. Secondly, there is a lack of evaluation system for the implementation of the training program. It's better to develop a more effective assessment list which is integrated with the training contents well. Third, the test materials that are used in the study may be limited in scope of content and in quality. Limitations as they have, it is thus open to any suggestions or criticisms.The study has provided positive implications for classroom teaching in writing, and more attention is to be called on for further studies. |
