Reading is a cognizant and verbal process and is one of the four macro-skills in language learning. Therefore more and more importance is attached to the training of reading comprehension, which is regarded as one of the four basic language skills in English learning. In reading teaching method, traditional teaching method gets the strong deprecation in those years, but the opposite method, schema theory of Reading, gets a warm welcome. The traditional teaching method thinks that under the influence of the traditional pedagogy, quite a few senior high school teachers often lay focus on the learning of the knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, as a result, their students ignore the learning, accumulating and applying of the schema knowledge, which is closely related to the reading materials. The teaching method of schemata thinks the learner's transcendental knowledge is important. The paper, with the achievements in reading studies and from the angle of schema theory, mainly explores the relationship between schema theory of reading and the traditional method.To start with, the paper focuses on the definition and different opinion of the schema theory. This paper also discusses three models of English reading theories, which are"the top-down model","the down-top model"and"the interactive model". Then, to the students in rural senior high school, it is necessary to discuss which model can be suit for the development of the students'level. From the different confines to the sorts and applications of the different schema knowledge in English reading, the author does a six-month experiment in my two classes, where this paper use two kinds of the models, one is the traditional teaching method,"the down-top model".the other is the teaching method based on the schemata theory, which is a teaching method based on the background information. The experiment result shows: in the case of students'low English level, it cannot improve students'English level if the application of the background knowledge can't be indicated when neglecting the traditional model. The more effective method is to make the students grasp some words and some grammar knowledge, which can make the students understand the meaning of the article and make a right choice. However, we can enrich the high-level students the background information, enlarge them reading extension and improve them reading level.
