A Pilot Study Of Teaching Sine By Area At High School Level

As one of the main elements in secondary schools, trigonometric function is of great importance. In middle and high school textbooks, "ratio method" and "coordinates ratio method" are frequently used in definitions of trigonometric ratio and trigonometric function. In this thesis, a pilot study of teaching trigonometric function based on a new definition of sine put forward by Zhang Jin Zhong was carried in a key provincial high school. The study was conducted by means of a questionnaire and interview. It is hoped to practice the new teaching approach and examine its impact on the students. At the same time, interviews with teachers combined, to collect their comments to the new definition and their suggestions of teaching the topic.This article focuses on test preparation, implementation of the questionnaire, the whole process of investigation and the results of the study. It is found that most of the students and teachers appreciate and recognize the new definition of trigonometric functions of the system. Having conducted a pilot study for 3 class periods, students in senior 1 soon keep the new definition in mind, and can reasonably explain some properties and solve problems using the new definition. It seemed that high school students were interested in the new definition and enjoyed solving problems in plane geometry by the method. Compared with students in senior 2, who have learned the conventional definition in senior 1, the senior 1 students shown their greater interests. The great majority of the teachers had great interest in the new definition, too. They believe that the definition of the new system would let the students to have a better understanding.Finally, based on the findings, the author made some comments and suggestions on the teaching of the topic .
