English new course standard points out clearly that according to the features of senior students'congnitive and demands of development, English course should stress the further development of intregrated skills, and improve the students'abilities of achieving information, dealing with information, analysising problems, and solving problems in English. Teachers should encourage them to explore nature actively and obtain knowledge in different methods, so that they can form the procedure and approach with senior students'features in English study. Actually, this kind of study is the process of discovering.The idea of discovery is outstanding in senior English grammar teaching.The new standard demands that senior English teacher must master the purpose of learning English grammar and changing the approach to teaching.The idea of discovery and exploration,which should be used in the grammar teaching, is the embodiment of the new course reform demands.Against this background, it is more helpful to a certain extent for the high school English grammar teaching function and the concrete operations to do the research of discovery learning .It is also more help to realize the curriculum project intention, understand the design idea and the overall request; It is also helpful in training the students'abilities of finding the problem and inquisition questions; training the students to use the scientific methods and the innovative spirit to get knowledge;and displaying student's initiative and their enthusiasm fully, thus creating essential conditions for the students'further study and development .This paper tries to answer the new curriculum reform, which begins with the fact that students have a poor performance in practice and reaches the conclusion that all of it originates in the poor mastery of grammar or can not be put into practice flexibly, which results in the low efficiency of most ELT classrooms in China. So how to guide students to learn effectively and how to learn is the first question that teachers should answer. In the author's opinion, discovery learning can put an end to such embarrassing situation. It is necessary to adopt such a teaching method in ELT classroom because of its specific advantages. This paper focuses on Chapter Three, which carries out the application and value of discovery learning of grammar teaching attached to a teaching case to give a specific explanation. Using plenty of materials,writer explains the theory detailedly that we English teachers should make our teaching effective, make grammar teaching lively and interesting to develop the students' positive passion of learning grammar; and develop the students' awareness of using language; and cultivate the students' ability of using the method of discovery to discover the rule of grammar,thus achieving the goal of middle school English teaching.In studying the principles and approach of discovery grammar teaching, this thesis tries to combine theories with teaching practice and it also gives a variety of examples, aiming to provide the high school English teachers with some theory guidance and teaching suggestions. Hopefully, it will be of any help to them.
