Burnout was a hot topic in sports.Sport scientists paid a lot of attention to this issue because of its negative effects on training and competition.Nowadays, the most frequently used quantitative method was self report,Athlete Burnout Questionnaire(ABQ) was considered to be the best instrument. But this questionnaire involved three independent sub-scales whose score couldn't be added up to get a sum,and resulted in difficulty in evaluating the level of athlete burnout. In this research, two studies were carried out to establish a rational method to evaluate athletes' burnout. In study one,381 athletes finished ABQ and Athlete Career Satisfaction Scale. The weighted sum score was created by multiple regression analysis, burmout explained 35.3%variance of Career Satisfaction. On the base of Dominance analysis, coefficients were formed for weighting each dimension.Z scores were used in the next analysis. The formula is that weighted Z burnout=.47 * Z reducement of achievement +.21 * Z emotion/physical exhaust +.32 * Z sport devaluation. On the base of advice from coaches and athletes, taking reference to others' classification, the 381 participants were divided into three groups by the Z total score of athlete burnout.Group 1:no burnout(total Z score less than -0.55),group 2:slight symptoms(Z total score -0.55~0.50), and group 3:serious burnout(Z total score greater than or equal to 0.50).In Study two,192 athletes participated and finished ABQ,Career Satisfaction,Sport Motivation, and Self-esteem Scale.Athletes' career satisfaction, sport motivation, and self-esteem were chosen as criteria for checking up thediscriminate validity of the method sorted out in study one,One-way ANOVAs indicated that significant differences were observed between the three different group of their career satisfaction, sport motivation, and self-esteem.It is therefor concluded that present method could be used to evaluate athlete burnout in Skill-dominant-category.
