Basketball, originated from America in 1891, nowadays enjoys great popularity among people all over the world. In China, it has gradually developed into the most popular sport, and much attention goes to Chinese Men's Basketball Team (hereafter, CMBT for short) and its achievement in international matches.Since the 1990s, we have had many excellent basketball players, whose height and strength are comparable to those of the top players in the world. Due to the continuous height increase, CMBT gradually depends more on the outside than the inside in its attack, and meanwhile misses its original characteristics—"swiftness, accuracy, agility". Judging on the whole from the performances of CMBT in the 2008 Olympics, not only the matches themselves but the after-match technical statistics show clearly the great distance between CMBT and the European and American teams. Regrettably, CMBT failed to break its record and remained No. Eight despite the most reasonable age distribution, the top-class center and the world-class coach. Many more problems have come to the surface, although we have made much progress.By means of literature review, specialist interviewing, video watching, mathematical statistics, comparison and logical inference, this thesis first studies the matches between CMBT and its opponents and the technical data of CMBT in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Based on that, it then analyzes the status quo of CMBT, points out the existing problems revealed in the 2008 Olympics and attempts to provide feasible strategies for the further development and training of CMBT. Findings of the study are shown as follows: 1. The average height, weight, and the Quetelet index of CMBT have reached the top level in the world, but the Rohrer index shows that Chinese basketball players' relative weight is less than that of the strong European and American teams.2. Major problems of CMBT revealed in the 2008 Olympics lie in: monotonous technical and strategic style, players with poor strategic quality, impotent attacks, weak guards, a low long-range-shooting percentage, low morale, and poor defense capability in presence of the enemy's breakthrough.3. Advantages are exhibited in some respects: with the gradual maturity of Yao Ming, the inside of CMBT has become rather strong, which the top teams in the world would not treat carelessly. CMBT has formed the technical and strategic style of "depending on the inside, with the combination of the outside and inside".4. With the RSR(rank sum ration) 0.53, the comprehensive power of CMBT in the 29th Olympics is graded C (the medium level), which indicates a long distance to the top teams, in spite of the great improvement shown when compared with the team in the 28th Olympics.5. The 24.8 average age of CMBT means great chances that the young players can be improved and perfected. In the conflict with top teams, they have gained more experience, built up self-confidence, realized the gap between the top teams and CMBT, and made sure what to do next.
