In senior English teaching, reading is considered to be the most important course. Teachers and students put great emphasis on it. However, the students do a great amount of practice and teachers spend most of their teaching time (as much as 2/3 of the whole teaching time) on this course, the students'reading ability level is still not high. One of the main reasons is supposed to lie in the limitations of the traditional reading-teaching approach, which block the improvement of students reading ability. The Traditional reading teaching process focuses on basic language points, like vocabulary, grammar, etc. It is not appropriate to develop student's consciousness, initiative and creativity. Theoretical researches and teaching practice show that the teaching approach based on students'autonomous learning is a relatively ideal teaching mode, and it has a positive function on improving students'English reading ability. So, to cultivate and develop students'autonomous reading ability, it is the task of the autonomous English teaching.Our research is subdivided into five major sections. The first section introduction first answers the questions that why we have to develop middle school students'autonomous reading ability, which is talked from three aspects, i.e. the need of basic educational reform in our country, the present situation of high school English teaching of reading, the importance of autonomous reading ability and the importance of the English autonomous reading ability. Then the writer states the importance of this research. Thirdly, the author analyzes the possibility of autonomous reading applied in the high school English teaching. Last, the ways of this research are stated.The second section states the theoretical research and the background of autonomous learning, including the definition and feature of autonomous learning, theoretical bases, and the theoretical research in autonomous learning by scholars from home and abroad.Section three writes about the relationship of English reading and autonomous learning, including the concept of reading, reading modes, the main obstacles for students to read effectively, the need of application of autonomous learning in reading teaching and the concept of autonomous reading.In the forth part of the essay, the author investigates high school students'autonomous reading ability and finds that the situation is not optimistic. Then the author analyzes the situations from eight aspects.In the last part, the author finds countermeasures for the factors that affect autonomous reading. These factors are self-efficiency, English reading motivation, attribution, setting up goals, English reading strategy, monitor for the reading process and evaluation of the reading result, learning will, resources utilization.
