The research explored the current cognitive situation of 391 secondary vocational school students' to conic section by means of questionnaires and interviews. It focused on their understanding mode of conic section, the solving case of standard equation, the grasp of the geometric nature, the difficulty of solving application problems and the ability to apply relevant mathematical ways of thinking.I. The research showed that the secondary cognitive situation was mainly reflected in the following four aspects:1. Few secondary vocational school students could reach the level of relationship understanding when they learnt the concept the conic section.2. The prototype of the standard equation greatly affected the full understanding of all forms of standard equation and understanding of the geometric significance of a, b, c and p directly constrained the ability to solve standard equation.3. With low lever of understanding the nature of conic section, the secondary vocational school students had great difficulty understanding the geometric significance of every conic eccentricity.4. The secondary vocational school students' ability to apply conic section and relevant mathematic ways of thinking was weak. The students' ability of solving application problems was directly affected by the ability to combine the numbers with forms.II. The factors affecting secondary vocational school students' cognition of conic section are as follows:1. Attitude 2. The types of conic section 3. Teaching and learning 4. The understanding and application of the history of conic section; 5. The development of curriculum goals and arrangement of teaching materialsIII. The writer analyzed the specific factors affecting secondary vocational school students' understanding of conic section and probed the teaching mode of improving and teaching strategies for effective teaching research and practice of the concept of conic section.
