Vocabulary is essential prerequisites of mastering the English language. Similarly vocabulary teaching is the key to the English teaching. During the process of teaching vocabulary, teachers often complain that students are too lazy to memorize the necessary vocabulary, and students always feel that their vocabulary is too small to deal with the examinations. In view of this, with questionnaires, interviews and analysis of the data, the research found the conclusion as follows: teachers'idea of vocabulary teaching is relatively new but there are still some problems, such as paying too much attention on input but not output; paying more attention on vocabulary learning rather than vocabulary acquisition. In vocabulary teaching process, the explanation of the meaning of the words are limited, without strategies teaching, especially the strategies of memorizing vocabulary. The survey shows that the reason why these problems occur is that the exam-oriented education is still in the leading position in our English teaching. In order to meet the college entrance examination, teachers have to teach how to use a word when having an exam and students also have to learn English just for an exam. Another reason is that the teaching materials in use are not ideal, vocabulary is not only too much and too difficult but also lack of a reasonable and adequate reproduction of the logic. To overcome these problems, to adapt to the needs of a new era in the teaching of English, the current high school English teachers have to update their teaching philosophy, establishing the "student-centered" thinking, instead of "examination-oriented." Teachers must update the concept of teaching and improve the teaching content by adding language use, culture knowledge, meaning expansion and strategies teaching. To achieve these objectives, methodology is important, such as the acquisition of vocabulary through extensive reading, guessing the use of contextual words, dictionary investigation, acquiring self-learning method, using multimedia-aided teaching method as much as possible, composition method etc. Of course, supervising promptly is also essential.
