The basic unit of language is vocabulary,and it is one of the three elements of language.In the communication process of human's mind and language,it is a significant part.If you want to have a good command of English,vocabulary is indispensable prerequisite condition.Consequently,vocabulary teaching is an important part of senior English teaching,which plays a huge role in students' elevation of language skill and has positive effect on expanding their vocabulary.The new curriculum reform posed a great challenge on the current senior English teaching.How to meet this challenge?How to optimize the English learning and teaching method and expand students' vocabulary effectively?This is a question which attracts a lot of attention from leaders of Senior High Schools.Furthermore,vocabulary teaching is a prerequisite and foundation of English teaching and the volume of students' vocabulary is bound up with the students' other abilities.The current Senior English teaching has a lot of deficiency.For instance,teachers do not pay enough attention to the vocabulary teaching;the students are not active enough in vocabulary class;teachers' approach to vocabulary teaching is too backward to stimulate students' initiative.The paper conducted questionnaires' based survey regarding the current situation and problems of vocabulary teaching in the background of the new curriculum.The author found some problems,for example,teachers pay little attention to English vocabulary teaching,and they use dated vocabulary teaching methods and models and they don't allocate time reasonably in English vocabulary teaching.Consequently,to explore a set of practical teaching method is the urgent task facing every Senior English teacher.To meet the challenge and need of the new situation,teachers should renew their teaching concept and cultivate students-centered notion.In addition,teachers should highlight the vocabulary teaching by using a variety of approaches,such as teaching students how to guess the meaning of a new word,expanding by reading and using multi-media teaching assistance,etc.Owing to the limitation of the author's ability and the sample is not large enough,the research is inadequate and serves as a purpose to induce a more complete research is expected in the field.
