Game-based learning is to combine education with the game, and introduce teaching to the game through instructional design, which using the game mechanism to provide a fun, lively learning environment. Game-based courseware is an attempt of Game-based learning. It draws from the game incentives and extracts the intrinsic elements of the game. Put these elements into the design of courseware is to form a new type of courseware. It not only offers lively and interesting games to attract students to enhance their interests, but also gives students good education to develop the ability of students. It is one of the great potential of the research focus in the field of education。This paper first defines the concept of game-based courseware, and simplely analysis those concepts which is easy to be confused, such as electronic games, educational games and game-based courseware, and summarized common elements of the game-based courseware, and described various types of game-based courseware and unique features of game-based courseware, and do a comprehensive overview to the game-based courseware.On this basis, the second part of the paper argues the feasibility of combining the game-based courseware and the teaching of geographic subject. This section makes the combination to be workable and necessary from the content of geographical subjects, characteristics of geography, subject and psychological characteristics of students, and describes the advantage of the application of game-based Courseware which can stimulate interest, develop the initiative and problem-solving abilities of students.The third part of the paper do a key research on design and development of the game-based courseware of the Geography in the Middle School. This section explores the theoretical basis of design for game-based courseware from the knowledge of positioning, experiential learning, multiple intelligence and game design aspects, described the principles of the design which should be followed, put forward the general process, Finally take the knowledge teaching of geography subject in the middle school as a case point, follow the design principles, and the design process to develop a practical game-based courseware.
