Writing has been the weakest point among the four skills of English learning in the English teaching of senior schools for a long time. We often see that most senior students are afraid of writing compositions, and teachers are afraid of correcting students' compositions. How to improve the teaching of English Writing has become a problem people have discussed for a long time. In China's English education, teachers are only instructors, while students only receive knowledge passively. Students have access to large amounts of listening and reading practice. However, they lack language output. The Length Approach emphasizes the language output through writing. It aims to enhance students' confidence in writing, and further improve their writing abilities and English proficiency.By employment of the Length Approach, the author hopes to see that writing long compositions can improve students' writing abilities. This thesis benefits a lot from other researches of the same subject. But the author of the thesis also puts emphasis on the organization of the writing when training students. The author maintains that though the Length Approach is carried out, English involves the overall development of the basic skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Some activities are organized and some methods are used to communicate with students, promote their interest in English and finally nourish students' language skills as well as their sense of judgment and ways of thinking.The research is based on the output hypothesis of second language acquisition. The subjects come from the middle school students in No.9 Middle school in Baotou. After the research, the author found that the Length Approach has a significant effect on English Writing. The students'attitude towards writing in the experimental class has changed from the passive to the active, the writing ability of English has been improved greatly, and the overall English proficiency has also been promoted. It has proved that the Length Approach agrees with new teaching ideas and the laws of language learning. The purpose of this thesis is to summarize the overall application in the senior school of the Length Approach.From the study, the author realizes that large amounts of language output can make students acquire language well; teachers should change their traditional roles and communicate with students through varieties of ways to try to improve their confidence in English learning. Although limitations are found in this study, the study proves that the Length Approach can improve students' writing abilities effectively.
