In the field of image coding, the high performance algorithms are always thefocuses of attention. Some new mathematical methods have been ifltroduced into thefield of image coding. For the aPplications of the image coding the implementation inhardware plays a key role. Wavelet transform has been aPplied to image codingsuccessfully, as a novel mathematical method.At first, some basic concepts about wavelet are illtroduced including definition ofwavelet and 2D image wavelet transform etc. Then an inieger wavelet transfOrm isgiven, which is suitable tO hardware implemefltation.Secondly, EZW(Embedded WaVelet Zerotree) is introduced, with emphasis onSPIHT(Set Partition in Hierarchical Trees).In order to realize the SPIHT in hardware wepresenied a listless SPIHT algoritbo .The experimefital results show that the improvedmethod has overcome the disadvantage of original SPIHT. It is of low computingcomPlexity high coding efficiency and good visual quality of reconstructed image. Thevalues of PSNR(Peak Signal Noise Ratio) are just 0. l dB less than the original method.It is the theoretical basis of hardware system.Thirdly, we imPlemented a remote sensing image compression hardware systemwith FPGA(Field Programmable Logic Array) of VIRTEX series.At last, a real time card is presented, acquiring image data, based on the PCI busprotocol.
