With the rapid development of Internet network, wireless communication, and interactive multimedia, video compression is becoming an important issue in the research area of video communication today. Many application require not only high compression efficiency,but also enhanced functionalities and flexibilities.In the recent twenty more years, wavelet theory is developed rapidly under the incessant efforts of scholars over the world, and the research areas of wavelet theory are also expanded thoroughly. Meanwhile, with the intercross and penetration of different knowledge, wavelet theory has applied to many other fields successfully.For example ,in the video coding, with the multiresolutional nature of wavelet analysis ,three dimensional wavelet video coding has been shown to be competitive with standard coders .Although 3-D wavelet video coder usually require a larger buffer and incur a longer delay than standard coders, an important feature of the 3-D wavelet approach is the support of scalabilities in the compressed video.The more detailed works are as follows:Firstly, the wavelet theory was introduced. Without much theoretical deduction in this dissertation, we focus mainly on the several characteristics of wavelet, such as the localization in both the spatial and the frequency domain derived from the compact support in the two domains; the rnultiresolution representation property; and the octave divided frequency property, etc. After a brief overview of the principles and methods of image compression, video coding algorithms are introduced including 3-D wavelet video coding and 2-D wavelet video coding .Based on the above, the research of this dissertation consists of three aspect : firstly, The 3D-SPIHT algorithm is modified which optimizes bit allocation . secondly, The 3-D video codingalgorithm based wavelet transform using lifting scheme is proposed, which not only increases computer speed but also gives superb video playback quality without any boundary .finally, The wavelet transform using lifting scheme is used in the object-based video coding ,which support scalability and user interactions. These functionalities and the object-based coding scheme make the proposed coding system very suitable for numerous applications like video streaming, interactive multimedia applications.In conclusion, video coding based wavelet is still in its developing stage, especially, the lifting scheme wavelet transform,its theory and application will develop further in the future.
