This dissertation mainly focuses on the design and implementation of a real time data acquisition system with RTAI, the real time extension of Linux, and PC/104 embedded hardware. To begin with the evolution of embedded system and comparison of researches on embedded system in China and other countries, the dissertation continue with embedded system concepts and theories. The methods to implement an embedded Linux, including tailoring commercial general Linux, applying RTAI and designing device driver for data acquisition board, and designing graphic user interface using MiniGUI are provided with deep details. RTAI provides deterministic and preemptive performance in addition to allowing the use of standard Linux applications. MiniGUI is a graphic user interface system for embedded system with characteristics of small size, fewer resource consumption, high performance and flexible configuration. In the end, an embedded real time data acquisition system based on Linux and PC/104 hardware is built. PC/104 CPU module and extensible modules constitute the small stack-based embedded system that is applied in variety of fields for its small size, high performance, reliability and wide temperature range. The performance test results have proved that the data acquisition system developed based on Linux RTAI and PC/104 hardware has the characteristics of strict real time and reliability required by the project in addition to graphic user interface that simplifies usage of the system and is an effective solution to reliable real time data acquisition.
