Nowadays, the technology of digital image compression is widely used intomany fields, such as multimedia communication and the medical image. And it willstill play an essential role in the future science application. But the amount of theimage-data are very huge, then how to process and organize the image-data isexclusively vital to the application fields. Digital image compression is all throughthe research hotspot of information processing technology. JPEG2000, a newstill-image compression standard, adopts the embedded wavelet coding methodinstead of the DCT method used in JPEG, and it's aim is to further improve theperformance of the existing coding methods. This paper first briefly introduces the theory of Wavelet, then go particularlyinto the embedded wavelet coding algorithm and some key technology used inJPEG2000, such as the Lifting Scheme, Progressive Transmission and the Region ofInterest Coding. This article also puts forward an image compression coding schemewhich is based on wavelet transform and EZW algorithm. The result of theexperiment compared with JPEG shows that the image compression method based onembedded wavelet coding algorithm is superior to JPEG.. This paper uses Visual C++6.0 as programming platform, and realizes a demosystem of the image coding algorithm, Progressive Transmission and the ROI Codingtechnology.
