| The use of the electrical power supply networks for communication purposes is known since the beginning of 20th century. The main idea of the powerline communications (PLC) is the usage of electrical grids also for communications to reduce costs caused by building of new communication networks. Major applications in the powerline communication are: Automatic Meter Reading (AMR), Distribution Automation and Supervisory Control, Home-Bus for making the building "Intelligent", Multimedia Communication used as the last mile part communications. This paper is focused on the channel properties, modulation methods and application technology of PLC systems. Lastly, a broadband PLC modem based OFDM modulation is presented. The powerline as communication channel has a specific disturbance characteristics. These include the dominant and widely varying noise sources, impedence changes, and multipath attenuation. Noise sources are electronic, electro-mechanic and even induced by the powerlineA communication model is developed including modeling of different disturbance scenarios. There are several multiplex and modulation schemes which are investigated to be applied in PLC transmission systems. OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is outlined as one of the best candidates for the application in the PLC transmission systems with higher data rates, because of its excellent bandwidth efficiency. At last, this paper provides the solution on PLC modem implementation, describes the design of all parts on hardware and software. |
