In the past years, Internet has been under the ceaseless advancement and change. From the aspect of the applications carried by Internet, there are three distinct trends: first, the trafic scale is continuously enlarging; second, there are more and more multimedia applications such as VoIP and network video services appear in Internet; third, critical applications such as e-commerce and telecommuting which are carried by telecommunication networks before are now carried by Internet. These changes ask more about the network survivability of Internet.Traffic Engineering is a technology of network engineering that can map the traffic to the physical flow while automatically optimize network resource to implement specific request of application program, it's also with the ablity of macroscopical modulation and microcosmic control. Survivability is the capability of a network to maintain service continuity in the presence of faults within the network, it requires to rapidly recovery from network fault and maintain the QoS of current service. This paper analysis and compares the survivability mechanisms in different hierarchy, including related concepts, classification and research status in WDM layer, SDH layer, ATM layer, MPLS layer and IP layer. The feasibility and pros and cons of coordination among layers are also outlined. With these survivability mechanisms in mind when designing traffic engineering, the objectives of traffic engineering can be implemented better. MPLS technology is an important mechanism that implements Traffic Engineering in the Internet and implements Internet QoS. Based on the research of supporting network survivability with MPLS, it's proposed to combine idiographic network environment considerations with survivability mechanisms to obtain better effect. The examples including optical network and MPLS VPN and the Comparison Criteria were listed. In the end, a MPLS VPN survivability mechanism which based on the policies of hierarchy and flow type is proposed, performance estimation is presented in recovery time and resource utilization.
