The traditional analogic monitoring systems have the defect that their costs are high and need special lines, can't join together and need a mass of storage medium. With the development of network, the new developing network monitoring systems overcome the limitation and make full use of net resources, enhancing performance and reducing cost, become the future development direction of monitoring systems.This paper has introduced the design and realization method of a network video monitoring system based on embedded uCLinux. The system is composed of camera, camera controller, network video server and client-end PC. It firstly describes image processing and embedded OS techniques, which are the two technical foundations; it also describes the design of several main module of the hardware part of the monitoring server, which includes image compression module, network interface module, realtime clock module and how to control camera, etc. In the software part, it describes in detail that how to construct the embedded software development environment, how to compile uCLinux kernel, the design of several tasks of the software, and the debug and test method and the application of network protocols have also been described.The network monitoring system introduced in the paper achieves the goal of playing smoothly and with high definition and nearly no mosaic effect, it enables user to set camera parameter and to control camera during the monitoring process. It can support multiple protocols such as UDP/IP, TCP/IP, ARP, FTP, DHCP, HTTP, SMTP protocols and realizes realtime display and can switch between multichannels and play 4 channels' images simultaneously and can sends alarm in FTP/MAIL mode. During long time test and perfect, the system runs steadily.
