As the improvement of the traditional cryptography, digital watermarking has played important role in the copyright protection of multimedia documents, so more and more people do the research on it. A digital watermark is an imperceptible, robust, secure message embedded directly into a document. Robustness is one of the most important requirements of digital watermarking, which is discussed in this paper. This paper addresses the watermarking based on error correcting coding (ECC).Firstly it discusses the background of information hiding, the basic concepts of information hiding and watermarking. Secondly it analyzes the error rate formal of watermarking ,which indicated that the watermarking performance is concerned with the embedded watermarking capacity, processing gain, the embedding strength and the use of ECC ,which offers the theoretical base of the study .So to improve the robustness of watermarking , the paper applies all kinds of error correcting coding (such as hamming code ,BCH code ,RS code and the convolutional code) in watermarking, intending to lower the detection error rate by correcting some errors. However, it doesn't work well. So in addition to the traditional method (Concatenated code and interleaver) the paper discusses some new method such as watermarking message randomization, the cover adjustment, the error-compensation based on the connected field )and do the experiments to prove. Finally the paper give a new wavelet watermarking based on FEC and data fusion . Besides normal detector and average detector, a new detector of a weight data fusion to estimate the population mean-value of BER rate is given ,a conclusion can be made that the proposed technique is practical.
