French painter Bernard Cathelin and our Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong live in the same century,20th century, a passionate tide of modern art, and have gone through the two stages of modern art development:Modernist Period and Contemporary Art Period (1960to present). Cathelin’s art comes after Paris Painting School in the20th century, and before the Minimalism in the sixties and seventies. His creations and sketches are well integrated and free and bold expression can be found in his landscapes, figures and still lives. The unique application of form simplicity, geometrical color organization, and Mexico red has become his artistic identity. While Wu Guanzhong, in his nearly seven decades of painting career, has committed to the nationalization of his oil painting and the modernization of his ink. His works, plain and elegant, drives from both Chinese and Western culture. Being good at employing silver, brilliant black, and pure white in the expression of artistic conception, Mr. Wu is another successful example, following the senior artists like Lin Fengmian, of the combination of both Chinese and Western art.Living in the same era, nourishing from modern culture, and immersing themselves in their self-world, Cathelin and Wu Guanzhong concern nothing about themselves and the matter world, which frees them from the outside interference and urges them to achieve their unique and original style of painting. Apart from all this, they manage to grasp and master the modern poetical means and methods in visual arts, making painting a free wing of mind, which present us once again the infinity of human perception. Therefore, the thesis hereinafter shall make a comparison between their pursuit of art and works of oil painting, analyzing their forms of art, organizations and symbolizations of colors, unique applications of gray and solid colors, and their artistic conception, to explore their artistic differences, and summarize that they both have taken on the spirit of modern art in the process of drawing on, achieved the perfect unification of color and form, and finally created an identical beauty of color and form with their own art language in their own culture-Western and Chinese, which shall, in a new context, inspire and edify us in exploring, and developing our personal art language of connotation and personality.
