Vincent William Van Gogh is one of the representatives of Post Impressionismpainter. His life is short, but he completes a lot of exciting works of art, such as thePotato Eaters, Sorrow, Vincent’s Chair with His Pipe. When he’s alive, Van Goghwas unknown. Except the Red Rineyard, his painting which was sold can be countedon one’s fingers. Economically, Van Gogh depends entirely on Theo’s support.Compared with those days, he enjoys quite a reputation today and his works are veryvaluable. His legend and tragedy let everyone feel great surprise and sorrow. Even thehigh auction price can not make up for van Gogh’s hurt: loneliness, anxiety, fear......This paper consists of three parts:The first part is the introduction.This part mainly introduces the domestic and foreign scholars’ present researchsituation of Vincent Van Gogh. Through combing, we can find the breakthrough andpoint the meaning of this paper.The second part is the main text, which is divided into four chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces Vincent Van Gogh’s tragic life, including thetragedy of his love, the tragedy of his cause, the tragedy of his work and even thetragic factors on his body.Comparing the difference between era and Van Gogh, the second chapter revealsthat deviation from the social psychology is the main cause of his tragedy. Strongbelief and the desire for success made him feel the neurosis of era. So, we are able tofeel “love and sin” from his works.The third chapter mainly studies the cause of tragic power on Vincent himself.Through the study of Vincent’s words and letters we can see that Vincent hasintroverted psychological way of catharsis. Vincent vents all his anger on himself. Hewould rather masochistic nor does harm to others, which formed his psychologicalcharacteristics of "strong masochistic". From a deeper level, the strongly inner "fearof alive" and "fear of death" makes Vincent clearly aware of the cruelty of life, Hebecame a madman to reveal the truth. Furthermore, Vincent William Van Gogh mayalso be hereditary and be influence of the living environment, so he is fragile andsensitive.The four chapter notes the significance of Van Gogh’s martyrdom. Van Goghnakedly expressed his despair in life and human nature. As a Christian and a artist, Van Gogh seen painting as his faith, as a way of improving the human nature, alertingthe shortcoming in human nature by his martyrdom behavior.The third part is the summary.Vincent Van Gogh’s tragedy is personal and it reflects the time. Such a cleverman as Van Gogh who is in Jesus’s blessing cannot avoid social harm, no better thanus who have lost the guide of spirit. How we find inner peace and happiness? Hismartyrdom behavior has revealed that the improving human nature, love and personalbelief can alleviate human beings predicament.
