Fingering is the essence of piano performance. Comfortable and correctfingering can assist performers in perfecting their music programs. This thesisanalyzes the importance of fingering in piano performing from the following fouraspects: The importance of fingering in keyboard music; Bach and his well-temperedclavier; The analysis of fingering of Bach’s well-tempered clavier by András·Schiff;and the inspiration and instructional meanings of Schiff’s fingering theory to pianists.This thesis selects András·Schiff’s theory and discovery as principle, to furtherresearch the fingering in Bach’s well-tempered clavier, by analyzing its phrasing,color, graces, melodic strands, as well as structure. András·Schiff’s logical analysis offingering of Bach’s well-tempered clavier has provided all pianists an deeper insightof Bach’s music. It has also emphasized the importance of fingering in pianoperformance.
