Choi Chi Won was a famous scholar of the late Silla period at the ninth century, andalso a learned person in China. He bore the deep understanding to Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism, from which he raised an idea of harmony and accommodationamong the three religious. This idea is valuable in studying both in the turmoil period atthe late of Silla and even the modern society. The scholars both in China and Korea are keen to the study of Choi Chi Won.Generally speaking, a mount of researches on Choi’s religious ideas are mainlyconcentrated on either his study on Confucianism, Buddhism, or Taoism, while rarely ofthem has studied the reasons for the formation of ideas of harmony and accommodationamong the three religious. Especially, there has not emerged a research that is related tothe study of Choi’s personal reasons for the construction of his idea. Apart from those, theresearches on Choi’s ideas have not involved in the exploration of its modern significance.Besides, some of Korean scholars are partly regarded Choi’s Pung Ryu Do Thought as oneof the inherent ideas in Korea. Therefore, on the basis of the relevant studies, this thesis is going to explore specificform of Choi’s idea of the mutual fusion of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, itsmodern significance, and especially the localization of this idea that is usually seen byKorean scholars as the Pung Ryu Do thought existed in the inherent ideas of Korea.
