| Text is an entity of textual and conceptual layers. However, the metaphor studymainly focuses on textual role of metaphor, and there is a lack of analysis of specificcohesion devices and the textual function of metaphor in news. Based on M. A. K.Halliday&R. Hasan’s theory of grammatical metaphor, and G. Lakoff’s theory ofconceptual metaphor, the thesis explores the textual coherent function of metaphor. Theanalysis is carried out on two levels: the linguistic level and the conceptual level. First,by dealing with the grammatical metaphorical expressions on the linguistic level, thethesis studies the textual cohesive function of grammatical metaphor. Then, by dealingwith conceptual metaphor on the conceptual level, the thesis explores the textualcoherent function of conceptual metaphor. From the analysis, it has been found out thaton one hand, grammatical metaphors can create coherence by lexical and grammaticaldevices, especially the extension of grammatical metaphors; on the other hand, thesystematicity of conceptual metaphor and overlapping entailments between differentsource domains can contribute to text coherence. The conclusion derived from theanalysis of news text in China Daily is that grammatical metaphorical expression is themain means of achieving coherence in news text on surface; the features of coherenceand systematicity in conceptual metaphors make news text achieve coherence in deeperconceptual domains. |
