Calligraphy is the traditional art of China, and it is also the treasure in the treasury vault ofChinese traditional culture and art. Through continuous efforts and creation, countlesscalligraphers have left a large number of precious calligraphy works for us. Those works fullyshow the creative spirit and wisdom and represent the spiritual civilization of Chinese nation.The calligraphy has taken the parallel development with History of Chinese characters, Chinesecivilization and Chinese literature. It fully reflects and shows the spirit world of Chinese people,and it is glorious and magnificent even today. Calligraphy is one of the broadest and the oldestarts in the East.Since the middle of the Ming Dynasty, calligraphy has gradually got rid of the bondage ofthe secretariat style, and walked to the normal development track. The center of calligraphyactivities has been moved to Suzhou, the city with flourishing economics and Business, fromBeijing, the city which was the political and cultural center. At that time, the Wu School wasforming. During the period of Zhu Yunming and Wen Zhengming, this school developed to itspeak, and these two people became the central persons in the calligraphy circle. Wang Chong,the disciple of Wen Zhengming, was almost as famous as Zhu and Wen. He mixed the scholar’sstyle, namely the profound literary accomplishment and broad-minded artistic characteristics,into calligraphy, meeting the needs of the aesthetic culture. He got rid of the vulgar breath ofthe secretariat style, and became the core of the development of calligraphy in the middle MingDynasty.This paper is divided into six parts: Part I, the historical background, including the generalsituation of the political system in the Ming dynasty, and the economy and culture in the areawhere the Wu School was. Part II, the description of Wang Chong, including the analysis of thesource of his family name and art name. Part III, the calligraphy thought of Wang Chong. PartIV, the formative factors of the calligraphy style of Wang Chong. Part V, the analysis anddiscussion of Wang Chong’s calligraphy. Part VI, the calligraphy status and influence of WangChong.This paper mainly takes the methods of document reference, work reference, work analysis,comparative analysis, theoretical research, historical research, and connection between theoryand practice, etc.
