The Tang Dynasty was a flourishing period in the feudal society of China. Its economy andculture were flourishing as never before, which lay a fine material foundation of the calligraphyin Tang Dynasty. The calligraphy works and theoretical works at that time proved Tang Dynastywas a period when calligraphy became civilized. The calligraphy reached a peak with its superiorskills, showing a prosperous scene. The regular script also entered into a grand era, which helpedthe skills of the regular script reach a mature stage, and helped form the tendency of the aestheticappreciation. Chu Suiliang was one of the four masters of calligraphy in the early Tang Dynasty.He first learned the regular script from Yu Shinan, and then Wang Xizhi. With his ownunderstanding, he finally created his own unique style of calligraphy–“Chu Style”.In this dynasty when the calligraphy advocated rules, Chu Suiliang created a new style ofcalligraphy through his hard practice and in-depth understanding in addition to inherit andimitate the calligraphic style in previous dynasties.This paper is divided into four parts: Part I, the social background of Tang Dynasty whenChu Suiliang lived, and his uneven official career, and the influence of Emperor Taizong to him;Part II, the process of his learning of calligraphy, and the rhythm sensation through thecomparison of his works in different times; Part III, the achievements of Chu Suiliang, the studyof the creation of “Chu Style”, the appreciation of Lanting Xu imitated by Chu, and theformation of his own habit; Part IV, the conclusion of his historical status and the influence tothe calligraphers in the following dynasties. Among which, Part II and Part III are the key partsof this paper.
