A Brief Discussion On The Public Welfare Activities Of Ford Foundation In China

In twentieth Century, the modern charitable foundations flourished in the United States, andit was the product of American progressive movement. The United States of America fundedmany preferential policies, which the Ford Foundation founded in1936was in the stimulus ofthe United States tax policy. In1935,after the Ford Foundation reorganization, it positioningitself in the commitment to international peace and improvement of human welfare charity, andprovide resources for any institutions worldwide with innovative spirits. In the second half of thetwentieth century, except for individual years, Ford foundation assets and expenditures are at thetop lists of other foundations.Nineteen fifties, the Ford foundation started projects related to China. At the end of the70’s,the Ford Foundation contacted with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, then directly intothe Chinese projects. Generally speaking, the relations between Ford Foundation with Chinawere divided into two periods: the early stage mainly funded American and other regions of theworld for the study of Chinese learning; the later stage was after the reform and opening up ofChina, to establish direct connection with China, to carry out public welfare activities.The paper is divided into three parts. The fund’s activities follow the development oftimes, constantly updated and diversified, and has quite perfect and scientific operationmechanism. The second part from6aspects, economy、education and culture、law、internationalrelations、environmental protection and reproductive health, introducing the public welfareactivities that the Ford Foundation carried out in China. China is the key area that the FordFoundation attentions and acts in oversea. The foundation adjusted its areas with the China’snational conditions and the social development, while every filed has its focus. The third partanalyzes the effects the Ford foundation has achieved. As an international foundation that has animportant influence on China, the Ford foundation has placed important influences on China andAmerica for a series of public activities in China. Undoubtingly, in China for so many years, theFord foundation promotes China’s social development, accelerates the process of China’smodernization, but as a while, it spreads American cultural values, permeates its ideology, andimproves the soft power of America.
