Renminbi(RMB) is the first currency issued by People’s Bank of China after itestablished, and has become the legal tender of PRC since1949. RMB is a miniaturethat concentrates the development of society, politics, economy, culture andart during that age, and reflects the visual image of a nation. There are5setsof RMB after the new China, while each set possesses its own unique era featuresdue to different historical background. Thus, the research of pattern designson RMB will contribute to a deeper understanding including the changes duringthese60years, the Chinese ethnic history and traditional values in culture.This article will start from four aspects-major frontal patterns, auxiliarydesigns, holistic designs and print technology-to analyze and study thedevelopment of RMB design, and compare the similarity and difference of RMBdesign among each ages, as well as the influence of other bill or graphic design.This article divides into5chapters. First chapter, briefly summarize the earlydesigns in bill patterns, and illustrate the influence on RMB design from earlydomestic and exotic currency. Second chapter, categorize the major frontalpatterns on different RMB, and compare them with the ones on foreign currencies.Third chapter the auxiliary design of RMB, analyze the decoration patterns,characters and shading secretary signals of RMB. Fourth chapter the holisticdesign of RMB, analyze the style and format design and compare them amongdifferent sets of RMB. Fifth chapter, analyze the innovation in print technologyand the contribution to the RMB design. Last is the summary, and draw a conclusionto the article.
