The Patio, one characteristic of the traditional folk house in the south of theYangtze River, displays both openness and closeness of abstract painting not only inlayout, construction size and space application of the buildings, but also in thecloseness and openness ideologically. The patio is a perfect combination of physicalusefulness and psychological needs, which is shown by the arrangement of closenessand openness. And openness and closeness are considered as the physical formlanguage of the abstract paintings, which stem from the reflection of the real life andexpress the artists’ emotion in the process of creation. The creators use the modelingfactors to reproduce the objective existence in combination with personal feelings. Moreover, various abstract paintings, in different forms, stimulate the sense organsby their special visual sense. Each abstract artist has his or her own conception inpainting, known as painting concepts. As something mysterious, the paintingconcepts can stimulate the complicate association space from the simple visual sense.Instead of being unchangeable, there are kinds of variants for the mysteriousexistence. But no matter how changeable the mysterious existence is, it is concealedin the layout of the painting. The variation depends on the openness and closeness ofthe rhythm of the painting, which gives people a deep impression visually andlimitless tension psychologically. The tension from the closeness and openness canalso be found in the layout of the patio, the inner arrangement of the buildings andthe psychological needs of the inhabitants. For instance, the tenon-and-mortise workin building the patio can give us a sense of comparison and the layout of the beamsand the pillars can give us the abstractness in visual sense and tension in psychology. All the above can provide us some reference in illustrating the inner layout of theabstract paintings. This thesis first illustrates the abstract works of Mark Rothko, RobertMotherwell and Franz Kline. The research shows that there is the layout of opennessand closeness in the paintings and strong visual tension in them. Starting fromanalyzing the openness and closeness of the patio and the construction layout, it thenexplains the similarity of closeness and openness between the patio and the abstractpaintings. Even though the expression forms are various, both have closeness andopenness in layout and contain endless visual tension, which give people a particularvisual and psychological response. Furthermore, the thesis tries to analyze the connotation of the patio constructionthrough the view of painting in combination with the space layout and structure ofthe patio. The author attempts to discuss the switch between the inner closeness andopenness of the patio and the language of the abstract paintings. Moreover, theauthor tries to explore the importance of layout of closeness and openness in thevisual tension of the abstract paintings, which aims to find the possibility ofswitching and applying the traditional Chinese factors in modern paintings.
