Liyuan architecture is the representative local architecture in Qingdao which was formed under the influence of Germany. For more than one hundred years, Qingdao residents who live in Liyuan architecture still live a life with the goodness of the traditional neighborhood. Liyuan culture is an important part of Qingdao local culture. However, for the quickening pace of urbanization and can not resisting the torrent of old structures’reconstructions, some of the Liyuan architecture are fading away. The urban architectural symbol which represents the life of lower and middle classes during1920s and1930s were gradually disappeared. The paper is based on the current situation of Liyuan architecture aiming to explore the way of transforming and updating the old architectures and to be more in line with modern people’s living requirement, and smriti Qingdao’s history culture and humanistic culture.The theory is based on the introduction and analysis. Combined with several aspects to studying the subject:the historical backgroundn architectural form、 unique culture、the successful reform cases of domestic historical block and the building renovation and protection methods of Liyuan architecture.The first part is the introduction. To recommending the background of Liyuan architecture and make clear the study purpose of the theory.The first chapter is about the urban context-the cause of the formation and significance of traditional houses. Residence is a kind of culture inheritance for a city and a period. Historical and geographical factors is the is the two cause of the formation of traditional houses.The second chapter is the formation of Liyuan architecture. Exploring the the special historical conditions of the formation, the characteristics and culture of Liyuan. Proposed the need of preserving and the transformation.The third chapter is the exiting statement of Liyuan. After centuries of baptism, the original architecture pattern and shape can not meet the needs of modern life. Some of the unreasonable should be improved, some of the reasonable portion and the section should be retained.The fourth chapter is the revelation about the protection and transformation of domestic historic districts. Using the case to bring the enlightenment of the transformation and updates of Liyuan, for example:Newland in Shanghai and Chengdu narrow alley.The fifth chapter is the protection and rehabilitation methods. Raising the two points:reuse of old buildings, the deeper understanding and the development of economic value.
