Regain, written by the famous French writer of the twentieth century-Jean Giono, describes a little village in Provence which, almost abandoned in the beginning, turns into prosperity at last. We owe its prosperity to the fact that villagers start to recognize the value of nature and labour again in the fields. Thus, the relationship between nature and human is the center of the book, In the tweentieth century when the civilisation of industry prospered, the writer focused on describing a small village far away from modernised cities and on exploring the way of living of people closely connected with the nature:it is shown that the development of science and technology doesn’t bring the harmony between nature and human in his point of view. This thesis, therefore, aims at exploring how the novel represents the harmony between the nature and human beings with the help of notions of the ecocriticism. The first chapter expounds the world described in the novel. The title of the novel whose fundamental meaning is the grass grown after being mown incarnates three elements of the theme of harmony:waiting, hope and harvest. It is these three elements that constitute four seasons of the nature and the cycle of life. The second chapter analyses the language of the book. It is exactly this singular language that represents the overturn of the established order:the syntax simple but rich in changes imitates the rhythm of the nature and conveys purity and profoundity of the rural language;different kinds of comparison reveal the similarity between human and other creatures. Human being is just one member of the big family of nature. The third chapter examines the narration of the novel. Thanks to the writer’s arrangement, natural time and space are constructed, human and nature are perfectly fused. The deep structure reveals the philosophy that the nature should be well treated like our mother. The nature which is fundamental possesses its own rhythm. So the key to the harmony betwwen nature and human is the change of attitude of human towards nature. This novel implies a lesson of life:obedient and humble towards the nature, human being should understand and revere her;what’s more, we should live in harmony with other creatures. This point of view corresponds to that of the ecocriticism which develops rapidly recently. We hope that this thesis would be helpful in regards of improving the relationship between nature and human.
