As a typical work of Chinese play classics, The Palace of Eternal Youth is characterized by its "image","music" and "cultural elegance", three representations of its poetic language. Translation of these representations will decide the transplant of its poetic language. With an abundant reading of materials, this paper focuses on the representations of The Palace of Eternal Youth’s poetic characteristics, sorts out relevant examples, comments on the translation and puts forward translation strategies.This paper is divided into three chapters to analyze the translation of poetic characteristics of The Palace of Eternal Youth’s language, namely,"image of language","music of language" and "cultural elegance of language".Chapter one consists of three parts which discuss scenery image, psychological image and imaginary image of its language. The translation of scenery image is about the right presentation of image frame, image elements and emotions, in which the translation of image frame is guided by image scheme theory. The translation of psychological image discusses the preservation of monologue, how many times should subject be translated, and the choice of single form or plural form. As for the translation of imaginary image, translators should carefully understand the context and emotions of characters, and choose appropriate sentence structure, narrative perspective and tense of time.Chapter two discusses translation of reduplicated words, rhyme and tone. Translation of reduplicated words should be based on the objects reduplicated words modify and highlight differences of image states, psychological emotions and movements of the objects. Translation of rhyme should be able to present emotions, and try to take the advantage of the language of English to form new rhyme. Translation of tone should be able to present the sound symbolism, and lead the readers to get meaning from onomatopoetic word.Chapter three discusses translation of allusions, quoted poems, and the metaphor of objects. Translators are supposed to remind the readers of the implicit meanings of those poetic language, and maintain its literary expression.When translating The Palace of Eternal Youth, translators should try to present image, music and cultural elegance in the original text and lead the readers to taste the glamour of its poetic language.
